Last month we talked about how we were sponsoring a show as part of Assemble Fest, a theatre festival in Hull, the UK City of Culture for 2017, which takes place down Newland Avenue each year. We’re delighted to report that the festival was a huge success, with over 800 seats sold and everyone enjoying a day of arts, culture, family entertainment and the celebration of a local community.

The piece that we sponsored was Hansel, written by London-based playwright Alex Oates and produced by Silent Uproar. A promenade adaptation of the Brothers Grimm classic Hansel and Gretel, it was given a fresh, modern twist and made possible on the busy street through the use of silent disco technology, a travelling sound designer and pop-up set pieces, one of which was a 660-litre wheelie bin (pictured with Marc Graham and Alice Beaumont).

The story follows a young homeless lad, Hansel, on an exuberant journey as he shares the tale of how he and his sister found themselves on the streets. The audience discovers how one day the siblings’ lives changed forever due to the misfortune of meeting a malicious character, whose only wish was to use and exploit the young duo. The show took a fairy tale and used it to transform familiar surroundings into something far more sinister and exciting, all while raising funds for the Hull branch of homelessness charity Emmaus.

We’re so pleased that our bin played a starring role in the show, and it’s now being used for its original calling of waste management down the very avenue where it gained its fifteen minutes of fame.
