Wheelie Bin News Roundup 22nd July

Hull City Council has posted CCTV footage on YouTube of a man emptying the contents of a bin onto the ground in the street. The council are appealing for help to track down the man who is wanted on suspicion of fly-tipping. A local councillor said that anyone who is convicted of such offences will be ‘named and shamed’ and it’s hoped that the council’s tough stance will be enough to deter anyone from dumping waste. The council are appealing for information to help identify the man, and have asked that the public call 01482 300 300 if they can provide any clues.

Developers of new housing in Nuneaton and Bedworth could be asked to pay for or buy their own wheelie bins for residents to help reduce the cash-strapped council’s spending. A council report states that it anticipates a rise in planning applications for new homes following the introduction of the Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Plan which aims to regenerate and develop the area.

The council said in its report that neighbouring local authorities do charge developers for the supply and delivery of bins, or require developers to provide them, and it may follow suit because of the effects of austerity on its budget.

Under the Environmental Protection Act, the council can either provide bins free of charge, provide bins for an agreed fee, or require householders to buy them. Up until now, bins have been provided for free, but with the expected rise in the number of homes, the council is taking the opportunity to review its policy.

Police in South Ayrshire are looking for a suspected arsonist who placed a wheelie bin up against the door of a property near Dundonald town centre and set fire to it. The inhabitants were thankfully unharmed, though the fire caused extensive damage to the property. Firefighters attended and extinguished the blaze, which the police say is being treated as deliberate.

The detective leading the investigation said that the perpetrator was completely reckless and put lives at risk. He added that police are still trying to establish a motive for the crime and are appealing to anyone with information to contact Police via 101, quoting incident number 5472 of Friday 12 July 2019. Alternatively, potential witnesses can call CRIMESTOPPERS on 0800 555 111 where information can be given in confidence.
