Residents in Portsmouth have critcised a new wheelie bin scheme, the residents have said it hasn't done anything to increase recycling rates across the area, it was initinially introduced after a trial which the council said looked promising.

Australian Town Uses Recycled Glass to Resurface Roads

A Council in an Australian Town has used recycling materials to repair and repave roads as part of a Green Roads Programme, Kingston town council has hired a company to collect glass and then converted into asphalt and used to repave roads.  So far 105,000 bottles have been recycled.

Council Has to Buy New Lorries to Handle Wheelie Bins

A council in Leicestershire has been forced to hire bin lorries as the lorries they currently use are not equipped to collect the new wheelie bins.  The council have ordered new vehicles but they are not due until September, this was all down to trying to save money, the wheelie bins are costing £550,000 and should last 10 years whereas the bag recycling costs £360,000 per year.

London Flats Set to Vacuum Away Recycling Waste

A new development of flats in London are set to to have a new innovative design in which to dispose of their recycling.  Designed by Envac it will suck waste down the pipes at up to 44mph and will spell the end of the wheelie bins and dumped waste for the area.

Recycling Old Clothes for a Good Cause

Binmen Turn Detective to Catch Those Who Fail to Recycle

Birminghams refuse collectors have been given a new job title of waste reduction and collection officer, this could mean that your bin men could soon be inspecting your wheelie bins, issuing advice on recycling and even issuing fixed penalties.  All this is down to the city having one of the worst recycling rates in the country and the council estimate that they can save £1.6 million per year if the rates increase.
