Using Solar Power to Boost Recycling

A community centre in New Zealand has begun using a new solar powered wheelie bin lifter for glass recycling.  The machine lifts the wheelie bins that are full of glass and tips them into a storage container, these are then taken away to be manufactured into new glass.

If you think council bin regulations in the UK are tough and confusing, residents of Christchurch, New Zealand have forked out over $50,000 this year alone from flouting local bin laws, if your bin is stolen or damaged it is free to get a replacement so long as it is reported within 24 hours, but many residents do not know this and are paying up to $132 a time for a new bin.

A Frozen Wheelie Bin is Snow Joke

Cambridge City Council have warned residents about the pending drop of temperatures that could result in waste and recycling becoming frozen, they have said that if a bin freezes the contents can stay stuck inside or the lid can freeze shut.  In past winters, some residents have had their waste uncollected because the lids have been frozen.

One of the stories causing outrage this week is from Sunderlands City Council, a pensioner had 3 of his wheelie bins stolen and set on fire in his local area, despite the fire service being called out he has been told he would have to pay £25 for each bin that was stolen and they would not even let him pay in installments, despite their policy of if your wheelie bin has been stolen with proof the charges would not apply.
